The forgotten benefit of Triple Glazing?

When talking about triple glazed windows and doors, a lot is (quite rightly) said about the energy saved as a result of having triple glazing and the consequent financial and carbon savings. However, a much lesser discussed topic is the additional comfort that triple glazed windows provide in the home.

This was highlighted to Flash Carbon recently via Fenestration News and a letter sent in by Edgetech’s Alan Fielder. As the Director of Sales & Marketing for a spacer bar company which would literally sell twice as much product if triple glazing became standard, one would assume that Alan would be strongly in favour of it. That said, he retained a neutral stance about triple glazed windows and concluded that Edgetech would ‘welcome people using twice as much spacer but on if it’s right for the market.’

Earlier in his letter though Alan outlined, in detail, the comfort benefits that replacement triple glazing provide; ‘whether or not it makes a marked difference to fuel bill costs, it does make a building more comfortable to be in. According to a physics study carried out by the PassivHaus Insitute in Germany, triple glazing allows the internal temperature to stay closer to the desired 21°c, at 18°c.’

In terms of insulation triple glazed windows are much closer than double glazing to the standard of insulation provided by the walls, floor and roof of a property. Therefore the overall insulation of a property is much more consistent and, inside the home, the result is that there are less cold spots, draughts and internal condensation. So if double glazed windows make homes more comfortable to live in, triple glazed windows make them even more comfortable.

The comfort benefits of triple glazing will be felt even more so in the late autumn, winter and early spring months when it is exceptionally cold outside. Triple glazed windows and doors enable homeowners to enjoy the picturesque wintry scenes without feeling the effects of them inside their home.
